Technical Notes: Since its introduction in 1880, Bruckner's Fourth Symphony has increasingly been added to the repertoire of virtually every major orchestra. The most memorable movement of that symphony is its dramatic and exciting "Scherzo." This very playable adaptation is in the original key of B Flat major, and special care was taken to retain Bruckner's original music by not adding any newly composed material. (Snare drum, bass drum, and cymbal parts were added but may be left out for a more authentic performance.) The highly chromatic developmental section was removed, and the structure was changed from A-A1-B-A-A1 form to A-B-A1 form. This reduced the length from 10 minutes to just under five minutes, and ideal length to program on any concert. Every section of your concert band has the opportunity to shine. Essential parts (especially horns, oboe and low woodwinds) are cued or doubled to make this adaptation playable by bands with limited instrumentation.
