Technical Notes: Note To The Director: Chorale #1 is fairly conventional in format. It emphasizes traditional chorale-style playing with the use of phrasing, legato style and proper blend within the vertical structure. Chorale #2 employs a short, repeated melodic figure with the bass and harmony changing underneath. It emphasizes breath control and support with a full, connected style throughout, as well, as intonation (the A flat (add 9) sonority should remain consistently in tune throughout the harmonic progression). Chorale #3 is based on a two-measure phrase and progression that is presented in six varying guises. All instruments have the same dynamic importance within each chord. Strive for maximum blending of all cluster tones. Chorale #4 always has a Perfect 5th sounding within the orchestration, with the remainder of the ensemble playing in a chorale style against it. It emphasizes intonation (5ths and octaves throughout), long tones and phrasing. Chorale #5 uses harmony based primarily in 4ths. It emphasizes listening (with the Perfect 4th predominating) and dynamic musicality.
