In each case, he first plays the tune, then slows it down to highlight how he achieves his dynamic effects. His intense fingerpicking style features heavy vibrato, snapping bass strings, powerful strums and riffs, deep bends, "artificial" or "harp" harmonics, bottleneck slide and plenty of funky attitude.
The songs Catfish teaches here cover hypnotic one-chord pieces in the "Mississippi hill" style; alternating bass syncopations; Caribbean-style improvisations inspired by the great Joseph Spence; and the powerful bottleneck pieces of Blind Willie Johnson and Bukka White. Songs include: "Eagle Bird," "Why Don't You Take Mr. Catfish's Advice?," "Police and a Sergeant," "Knockin' Myself Out Gradually by Degrees," "Brown Skin Girl," "Bye and Bye," "I'm Going to See the King," and "Jitterbug Swing." Running time is 85 minutes.
