Rico Royal reeds are Rico's intermediate line of reeds. They are a little more consistent than the standard Rico reed, without being as pricey as the high end reeds.
Reeds are typically available in strengths of 1 through 5 (some brands label their reeds as Soft, Medium Soft, ... through Hard) In general, the lower the number, the easier it is to play most notes. The down side, is that the lower number reeds just don't sound as nice, and make it harder to hit high notes.
As a general rule, we recommend reeds with a strength of 2 (Soft) for people just getting started, and strength 2 1/2 (Medium Soft) for people who have played for a year (less time if they take lessons). The harder reeds should only be used after using the next softer size of reed for six months to a year, or at the recommendation of a private instructor or band director. This book is designed to give the jazz musician insight into the improvisational talents of the members of the group Free Flight. Although the music is advanced in nature, even young musicians will benefit from listening to and working on these solos. This book is available for flute, B Flat instruments, alto saxophone, and piano, and each book includes a CD recording of the original performance as well. The CD has two versions of each tune: the first version allows you to "dial out" either the flute or the piano by adjusting the balance knob, and the second version works the same way for bass and drums, allowing any of the four instrumentalists an opportunity to play along.
This music is not particularly easy, but is highly recommended for any intermediate or advanced players.
